If you’ve been following me for a while, you know I love exploring Filipino cuisine. Recently, I decided to dive into Filipino desserts, and what better way to start than with Filipino Turon?

What Are Filipino Turon?

Filipino Turon (pronounced too-ROHN) is a popular Filipino snack made by wrapping bananas and jackfruit in a thin lumpia or spring roll wrapper, then frying it until golden and coating it in caramelized sugar. You’ll often see turon sold hot by street vendors in the Philippines. Sometimes they’re even served on sticks without the wrapper and dipped in a glossy caramel sauce. I’ve made over 20 Filipino recipes so far, but this one… oh baby, it holds a special place in my heart.

Filipino Turon Ingredients

  • Bananas: Traditionally, saba bananas are used. They’re starchy and slightly sweet, which is perfect for frying. You can also use plantains or regular bananas.
  • Pastry Wrapper: Lumpia wrappers are the classic choice, but spring roll or egg roll wrappers work too.
  • Jackfruit: Adds a subtle fruity sweetness that pairs beautifully with the banana.
  • Brown Sugar & Butter: For the caramel coating that gives turon its signature crunch and sweetness.
  • Cooking Oil: Traditionally, a neutral oil is used, but I used beef tallow. Not authentic, but man oh man is it good!
A bag of light brown cane sugar, a can of young green jackfruit in brine, a package of spring roll pastry, and a bag of whole saba bananas placed on a granite countertop.

How to Make Filipino Turon

Start by slicing the bananas in half lengthwise. You could leave them whole, but slicing them helps everything cook evenly and makes rolling easier. Roll the sliced bananas in brown sugar until fully coated.

Lay out your wrapper, and place a banana slice near the bottom. Add a small piece of jackfruit on top of the banana. Fold in the sides of the wrapper, then roll the banana and jackfruit up tightly, like a little burrito. Seal the edge with a bit of water or egg yolk so it doesn’t open while frying.

Heat your oil to 350°F. Place the turon in the oil and fry until golden brown and crispy. Remove and drain on a wire rack while you make the caramel.

For the caramel, melt ¼ stick of butter with ¼ cup brown sugar in a small saucepan over low heat. Slowly whisk in 2 tablespoons of water until the sugar melts and the mixture becomes glossy and sticky. Toss the fried turon in the caramel until fully coated, then plate and serve immediately.

Why I Love Filipino Turon

This snack is dangerously good. I love that it’s crunchy, sweet, and super easy to make! It tastes so good served fresh and even better with vanilla ice cream on top!
